History of the IFE Southern Branch Committee
In 2018, Jake Derrick decided to try to reform the disbanded Southern Branch. He succeeded! Due to his and the fellow committee members hard work and dedication, we are now an active and thriving Branch who are passionate about fire safety.
Having created a branch with the goal of providing information and supporting like minded fire safety professionals, a highly popular monthly webinar was created, which aimed to provide topical discussions on a relevant subject at the time. These were always well supported with 200+ regular attendies and endless positive feedback.
We are very grateful to Apollo Fire Detectors Ltd for the support they have given to the Branch. Without their backing, the branch wouldnt have been able to get to the position that we are in today. Thankyou Jacob, Andrea, Steve and Mike!

PREVIOUS President – Jacob Derrick
Jacob began his career studying electronics and electrical engineering and has a background in electronic fire and security systems. He is passionate about fire safety and engineering and loves to challenge norms and propose new ideas or ways of working. He works as a Fire Engineer on all aspects of active and passive fire engineering design, risk assessment and contract management. He is an Incorporated Engineer and Chartered Member of CABE. He enjoys learning and development and studied the FPA’s European Diploma in Fire Prevention. He has been accepted to the GCU BEng (Hons) programme in Fire Risk Engineering, starting in September 2021. He has been involved with the IFE since 2018 when he restarted the branch activity and attend the International General Assembly meetings on behalf of the Branch. One of his desires is to try and provide better engineering and safety through cooperation with everyone involved in building design, management, and use; breaking down barriers, specifically in construction, caused by ‘siloed’ responsibilities and thinking. He believes in a holistic approach to engineering solutions and that everyone, no matter their role, has a part to play in making the work safer from fire.

“A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.” - Douglas Adams
PREVIOUS SECRETARY – DAVID GOVER
Professionally, David have a H&S background and took a keen interest in fire safety from the get-go. He really cut his teeth with fire safety while working with several local authorities on their fire risk assessment programmes.
He's worked as a consultant, an assessor, as well as leading a team of fire risk assessors and most recently have just started working for a principal contractor where his new role sees him splitting his time between ensuring the construction sites are fire safe while the projects themselves are compliant with the ever changing regs.
It really is a fast-changing industry at the moment and like most of us he loves a bit of CPD and training. Currently he's working towards his MIFireE and am looking into sourcing his next training course.
