IFE Southern - Early Careers Events
Overview
Starting your first career or transitioning into a new career can be an incredibly daunting time. The feelings of imposter syndrome, fretting over whether you will be successful or whether you will learn fast enough, deciding where you should turn to for support, and wondering how to structure the pathway for your own progression can leave you seeking guidance. Early career professionals are the future of the industry. These professionals require focus, inclusion, and guidance so that they can develop the essential skills, competence and relationships required to lead the way for future fire professionals. The Institution of Fire Engineers cares about the quality of the pipeline of future engineers and laying down the support and knowledge necessary to aid in the development of their skillsets. Therefore, the IFE Southern Branch Committee are aiming to provide a series of free virtual seminars and networking events to support the growth and development of early career fire professionals in a supportive and inclusive environment.
This series of events will provide an opportunity for early career professionals to gain both technical knowledge and soft skills training through a range of CPD sessions and upskill workshops, carefully tailored to develop competence and professionalism as a fire safety consultant. Providing opportunities to develop confidence in networking, collaboration and presenting, alongside a variety of consultants and other future fire professionals, this series of events will facilitate learning from other people’s experience and expertise, alongside encouraging the development of a new support network.
Examples of soft skills which will be focussed on over the events will include;
• Project management (incl. budgeting, resourcing, and forecasting engineering projects)• Methods for dealing with difficult clients• Learning from feedback and maintaining confidence• Commercial awareness – who am I speaking to, and how do I align my response?• Memberships, CPD logs and progression pathways
Technical knowledge which will be developed over the series of events will include;
• Incoming changes to guidance• The London Plan• Evacuation lifts• Introduction to external fire spread• Ventilation in residential buildings• Ventilation in firefighting shafts (non-residential buildings)• Fire Service access
Attendees of each session will be issued with associated takeaway material.
Events will be held every two months, each tailored to offer insight, information and guidance, whilst accommodating the feedback received from participants in order to build a strong foundation for future growth - a series of webinars directed by you.
Whether you’re a student, graduate, apprentice, someone who is returning to work after a career break or someone who is venturing out into the Fire Industry at another stage in their career, sign up to join the early careers events run by the IFE Southern Branch.
